Scientists from China say they have managed to launch an artificial intelligence model as complex as the human brain on their most powerful supercomputer.
The Sunway computer was developed in 2018. Then it turned out to be the most powerful such device. It was equipped with 9 petabytes of memory, as well as 37 million processor cores. The device was developed specifically for research in the field of electronics and digital technologies, as well as for the development of unmanned vehicles.
Chinese scientists used the Sunway supercomputer to train an AI model called bagualu, which means “alchemist’s pot.” The researchers trained baguala with a total of 174 trillion parameters. According to the South China Morning Post, the model rivals the number of synapses in the brain. However, in fact, the exact number of synapses in the brain is incredibly difficult to determine. According to some estimates, there are about 1,000 trillion of them in the human brain.
It is also worth noting that 174 trillion parameters cannot be called an impressive result when it comes to an artificial intelligence model. For example, last year Google Brain developed a language model of artificial intelligence, including 1.6 trillion parameters.
Nevertheless, Chinese scientists are confident that their development will compete with the best US Frontier supercomputer to date. Artificial intelligence can be used in all areas — to control unmanned vehicles, for quick calculations and analysis of results in science, and so on.
