Russian officials refuse Zoom and WhatsApp

The government instructed officials to refuse to use the usual foreign Zoom, Webex and WhatsApp services in official communications. This is reported by Kommersant with reference to a letter from the director of the Department of Digital Transformation of the Ministry of Economy Alexander Maslov to First Deputy Minister Ilya Torosov and other colleagues.

Civil servants are offered to conduct working correspondence in domestic VKTeam (messenger) and TrueConf (videoconference).

As noted, the messenger from VK is included in a set of applications called “Automated workplace of a civil servant”. It is planned that by 2024 all officials will switch to fully import-substituted software.

On June 1, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko instructed employees of both federal and regional authorities to abandon foreign messengers for working correspondence. The Ministry of Finance was appointed responsible for the execution of this task, which recommended that officials transfer working correspondence to the service developed by VK for civil servants.
