The Nikkei media corporation reported an attack using extortionate software on the company’s headquarters in Singapore. The incident occurred almost a week ago, on May 13, 2022.
Unauthorized access to the server was first discovered on May 13, which became the reason for an internal investigation. Nikkei Group Asia immediately shut down the affected server and took other measures to minimize the consequences of the attack.
The affected server probably contained customer data, and Nikkei is currently investigating the nature and scope of the attack. At the moment, the data leak has not been confirmed, but the company reported the attack to the Japanese and Singaporean authorities responsible for protecting personal data.
“We sincerely apologize for the trouble we caused,” the Nikkei PR service said in a statement. “We will take appropriate measures in cooperation with the relevant authorities and will strive to strengthen the protection of information.”
Recall that two years ago Nikkei was a victim of fraud. The American division of the company lost about 3.2 billion. Japanese yen (approximately $29 million) as a result of fraud. The funds were transferred by an employee of the company on the instructions of a fraudster acting under the guise of the head of an international firm.
