The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine turned to the hacker community for help

The Government of Ukraine has appealed to the Ukrainian hacker community to help protect the country’s critical infrastructure and conduct cyber intelligence operations against Russian soldiers.

Since the beginning of the invasion of Russian troops into the territory of Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, the following appeals began to appear on hacker forums: “Ukrainian cyber community! It’s time to participate in the cyber defense of our country.” Hackers are asked to fill out a Google Docs form, specifying their specialization (for example, malware development) and professional references.

Yegor Aushev, head of the Kiev Cyber Unit Technologies information technology company, told Reuters news agency that he posted appeals on forums at the request of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The Ukrainian government does not comment on this issue.

As Aushev explained, the volunteers from the hacker community will be divided into two divisions – defensive and offensive. The defense division will ensure the safety of critical infrastructure facilities, in particular power plants and water supply systems.

The offensive unit is organized by Aushev himself. His task will be to help the Ukrainian army conduct intelligence operations.

According to the specialist, as of the evening of February 24, he had received hundreds of applications from volunteers. All applications will be carefully checked in order to exclude enemy agents.
