Cryptominers Have Found a Way to Unlock Nvidia RTX LHR GPUs


At the beginning of 2021, Nvidia released low-hashrate versions of its graphics cards, starting with the RTX 3060, in order to prevent cryptocurrency miners from buying them all before they fall into the hands of gamers. However, it seems that this plan just failed.

Almost immediately after Nvidia started releasing cards with protection from mining, enthusiasts did not give up trying to hack it. At first, they managed to raise the productivity of Ethereum mining to 50% of the maximum, and then to 70%. But now LHR has been hacked completely and gives miners the opportunity to use the performance of the cards to the maximum of their capabilities.

The “Nvidia RTX LHR v2 Unlocker” tool removes the hashing speed limits of limited RTX 3000 series cards. According to the creator of the tool Sergey, the program is “simple, intuitive and does not require additional knowledge” to use, and at the same time boasts the ability to firmware and change the new BIOS of the GPU.

The LHR platform uses specially designed drivers that are automatically downloaded after installation. The process is automated, safe and reversible, so before that the program creates a backup copy of the BIOS.

As for performance, Sergey’s Github page claims that unlocking the LHR RTX 3080 can lead to an increase in hashing speed up to 100 Mh/s, which exceeds the capabilities of a dedicated Nvidia 90HX GPU for mining.

If there are differences from non-LHR video cards, they are no longer percentages, but units of MH/s. For example, the performance of a conventional but optimized GeForce RTX 3070 is about 60 MH/s. This is only 3 MH/s more than the hacked GeForce RTX 3070 LHR.

The software is free to use, but the author prohibits the sale of BIOS modified using the program. And, of course, there is a standard caveat: all actions to hack the anti-mining protection of a 3D card are carried out by the user at his own risk and the author is not responsible for any breakdowns.
